Setting the record straight – low carb is my way.
I can understand how threatened the medical and nutritional establishment must feel when patients stop their unsuccessful “balanced diet” treatment and opt instead for the low carb, high fat #LCHF diet that Prof Tim Noakes is suggesting for people who are carbohydrate intolerant.
What I can’t understand is how determined some of them seem to be to discredit Prof Noakes research findings and his recent contribution to the South African Medical Journal (you can access his article by following this link to it.)
It seems as if soon after an article appears quoting Noakes that there is a fury of co-signed letters to the editors detracting him. As Prof Noakes refers to my successful weight loss and reversal of hypertension and diabetes in his Medical Journal submission (I am Case 2) I take comments about it personally.
None more so than those quoted in a piece by Dr Luc Evenpoel in The Times Live. Follow this link to read his article. Dr Evenpoel is one of the anaesthetists on the Bariatric surgery panel at Durbanville Medi-Clinic and I have attended one of the talks he gave to the Bariatric Support Group about his weight-loss book.
He is wrong when he says in the article that Noakes’ claim that I was too ill to be given the anaesthetic for the Bariatric surgery is false – I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea and needed to have treatment for it before having Bariatric surgery because of the risk it placed during anaesthetic. I never consulted Dr Evenpoel. While he is right that I did ask a question at his talk, his suggestion that it was his diet and not Prof Noakes’ is misguided. I have not read his book.
On the one hand I feel flattered that I’m being talked about but I do not appreciate being used to support an argument against Prof Noakes who I respect for taking an unpopular stand.
For the record, the single biggest contributor to my successful weight loss (which, incidentally, I have maintained since March 2013) is the removal of starch, sugar, alcohol and high-carbohydrate vegetables from my diet.
With you all the way Brian. There is such a ground swell going on at the moment toward Paleo that many who stand to lose credibility and financially are running scared. Even the nurse I see at PnP has switched to Paleo and after 1 month has lost 3 kg and cut her Diabetes meds right back and feeling great.
